What to Do:

  1. Line up the different varieties of apples for children to see. Ask them what fruit they are. Are they all apples? Why do they look different? Explain that there are lots of different types of apples.
  2. Introduce the different types of apples. Cut the apples in half and let students smell and touch them. Discuss the color, smell, size and shape of each variety of apples.
  3. Mention that most apples are ready to eat in the fall, but many kinds of apples can be bought all year in the supermarket. Tell the students that you've brought some apples for them to try with a special recipe - Apple Fun-Do.
  4. Review the recipe with the students. If possible, prepare the Apple Fun-Do while the children watch.
  5. When the Fun-Do in ready, have students wash their hands. Offer two apple slices to each child.
  6. Put about one tablespoon of Fun-Do in each child's cup. Demonstrate how to dip the apple wedges in the sauce. Role model "trying a new food" by tasting it in front of your students.
  7. Add Apple Fun-Do to the Tasting Chart. Take a tasting survey. Have children help count and record the results on the Tasting Chart. Stamp the Tasting Passport of all children who tried the Apple Fun-Do, as well as your own. Congratulate the children for taking a taste.
  8. Optional: Send home a copy of the Food Matters Family Newsletter with each child.
