Synopsis:
Students use their five senses to compare orange and yellow cheese after listening to a tale about two mice cousins with different taste preferences.
Activity Objectives:
Students will be able to:
- Listen to the story, "A Cheesy Tale," and answer questions about it.
- Use senses to describe the taste, smell and color of white and yellow cheese.
Material and Advance Prep:
What to Do:
- Introduce the figures Clyde R. Countrymouse and Carolyne Q. Citymouse. Optional: Have Clyde and Carolyne teach the children the "Cheese Please" song.
- Read "A Cheesy Tale." As characters and objects are introduced, have children place the appropriate figures on the flannel board or hold up paper cut out.
- Discuss the story, asking questions such as:
- Where did Clyde live? Carolyne live?
- What did Clyde and Carolye like to eat?
- What did they find out when they tasted each other's favorite cheese?
- What advice did Chef Combo give the cousins?
- What do you think Carolyne and Clyde will do next time someone serves a new food?
- Bring out the two plates of cheese. Tell the children they are going to use their five senses to describe Clyde's and Carolyne's favorite cheeses.
- Pass around a sample of the white cheese for children to see, touch and smell. Ask them to describe the cheese using these senses. Repeat with the orange cheese.
- Ask children which cheese Clyde brought to the city. Put Clyde's figure in front of the platter of orange cheese. Put the figure of Carolyne in front of the white cheese.
- Role model "trying a new food" by taking a taste of each cheese. Offer a piece of each cheese to the students. When each child who wants has tasted the cheese, take a tasting survey. Have the children help you tally the results and record them on the Tasting Chart.
- Stamp the Tasting Passport of everyone who tastes one or both cheeses, even if they don't finish them. Also stamp your Tasting Passport.
- Optional: Send home a copy of the Food Matters Family Newsletter with each child.
