Making Dinosaur Bones

Dinosaur Dinosaur  Take-A-Taste Take-A-Taste Activities

Grade Level: Pre-k / K
Rating: 3.5 Stars

Synopis:
Students shape a "dinosaur bone" then take a taste.

Activity Objectives:
Students will be able to:

  • Wash hands, shape and taste a dinosaur "bone."
  • Help count and record the results for a tasting survey.
  • Describe the taste, smell, texture and appearance of their dinosaur bones.

Material and Advance Prep:

  • Gather ingredients and equipment for Dinosaur Bones (Adjust for class size)
  • Make finely crushed graham crackers; place in bowl and set aside (These can also be purchased)
  • Prepare Dinosaur Bones mixture
  • Prepare a sample of a "finished" Dinosaur Bone
  • Plates and napkins (1 each per child)
  • Serving spoon
  • Divide Dinosaur Bones mixture onto plates so that each child has a portion

What to Do:

  1. Ask if anyone has ever seen a dinosaur bone and generate some discussion. Talk about digging for dinosaur bones and that if we were to visit a science museum, we might see some dinosaur bones. Ask how scientists learn about dinosaurs.
  2. Introduce the food preparation activity by having students wash their hands and telling them that today, they are going to make a dinosaur bone. This "bone" is fun to eat and good for us.
  3. Show your Dinosaur Bone to the children and model what they are to do.
  4. Pass out portions of mixture and let the children make individual "bones." When their Dinosaur Bones are made, pass around the bowl of graham cracker crumbs and let children sprinkle their "bones."
  5. Role model "trying a new food" and take a taste of your Dinosaur Bone in front of the students. Invite the children to taste their "bones." Talk about the smell, taste, texture and appearance.
  6. Add Dinosaur Bones to the Tasting Chart. Take a tasting survey. Have students help record and count the results on the Tasting Chart. Congratulate the children for taking a taste. Stamp Tasting Passports. Remind students that sometimes they won't like a new taste and that's okay. What's important is to be a "food taster" and to always give nutritious foods a try.
  7. Have children help clean up.
  8. Optional: Send home a copy of the Food Matters Family Newsletter with each child.
