Mary Margaret and Her Milk Blender Special

Synopsis:
Students participate in a flannel board-type activity as they listen to a story about a truck driver, Mary Margaret.

Activity Objectives:
Students will be able to:

  • Use story clues to describe how milk gets from the dairy to the grocery store
  • Role-play story events during a second reading of the story

Material and Advance Prep:

  • Review "Mary Margaret and Her Milk Blender Special" PDF story
  • Four toy trucks, including a delivery truck
  • Print PDF with patterns and prepare felt figures or colored-in paper patterns:
    Characters: Mary Margaret and Franklin Dee
    Trucks: Milk and Fruit
    Large cows: Holstein (black and white) and Jersey (caramel brown)
    Small cows: Ayrshire (white with red-brown spots; Brown Swiss (brown to silver gray); Guernsey (brown with white patches)
  • Flannel board (or other board if using paper patterns)
  • Tape (if using paper patterns)

What to Do:

  1. Show students a few different types of toy trucks and ask what each might be used for. End with the delivery truck. Talk about the role that trucks and truck drivers play in getting our food from the farm to the grocery store.
  2. Introduce "Mary Margaret and Her Milk Blender Special" as a story about a girl who delivers milk from the farm to the grocery store. As you read the story, introduce the figures and have students place the appropriate figures on the board.
  3. Discuss the story. You might ask questions such as:
    • What was Mary Margaret's job?
    • Why was she in a rush one day?
    • What happened when she drove in such a hurry?
    • What do you think Mary Margaret learned?
  4. Read the story again. Invite students to role-play the story as you read it.
