Milk Blender Special

Transportation Transportation I-Can-Help Recipes I-Can-Help Recipes

Grade Level: Pre-k / K
Rating: Not Yet Rated

Synopis:
Students make a Milk Blender Special from strawberries, bananas and milk.

Activity Objectives:
Students will be able to:

  • Observe the color, shape and texture of strawberries and bananas before and after they are blended with milk.
  • Use right-to-left sequencing to assemble a My Favorite Bug snack.
  • Read a rebus recipe for making a milk blender drink.

Material and Advance Prep:

What to Do:

  1. Open the activity by showing children the blender you will use for this activity. Ask if they know what it is and how we might use it. Talk about different foods that can be blended together. Show students the strawberries and bananas.
  2. Have the children imagine that a milk truck with strawberries and bananas on it gets caught in a big whirlwind. The milk, bananas and strawberries get whirled and swirled together. What would it look like? What would it taste like? Do some predicting, then introduce the "Milk Blender Special" activity.
  3. Optional: If you completed the activity, "Mary Margaret and her Milk Blender Special," introduce the activity by reviewing the story, "Mary Margaret and Her Milk Blender Special," instead. Be sure to ask students how they think the Milk Blender Special looked.
  4. Invite students to help prepare the drink. Have the children wash their hands. Then read the rebus recipe, step-by-step, with the children as they help with tasks such as:
    • Wash the work table
    • Peel the banana(s)
    • Measure and pour the milk
    • Add the fruit to the blender
    • Push the blender button under the supervision of a teacher
    • Help clean up
  5. Have the children observe the shape, color and texture of each fruit before it is added to the milk and after it is blended.
  6. Role model "trying a new food" by taking the first "taste." Provide each child with a taste.
  7. Add Milk Blender Special to the Tasting Chart. Take a tasting survey. Have children help count and record the results on the Tasting Chart. Stamp the Tasting Passport of all children who tried the drink, as well as your own.
  8. Optional: Send home a copy of the Food Matters Family Newsletter with each child.
