Synopis:
Students discuss the foods used to celebrate different holidays. Then they each make Sweetheart Pudding to celebrate Valentine's Day.
Activity Objectives:
Students will be able to:
- Identify foods typically eaten at Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day
- Use the right-to-left sequencing of rebus recipe card instructions to prepare a Sweetheart Pudding snack
- Taste the Sweetheart Pudding snack and participate in a tasting survey
Material and Advance Prep:
- Food Models or pictures of Thanksgiving foods (or foods served at another holiday recently)
- Gather ingredients for Sweetheart Pudding
- Pour milk into a small pitcher
- Put dry pudding mix into a small serving bowl
- Prepare Sweetheart Pudding recipe cards (PDF)
- Arrange each card and its ingredients on a separate tray; sequence trays from left to right
- Small cups and napkins (1 each per student)
- Measuring spoons
- Clock with second hand
- Tasting Passports PDF

- Tasting Chart
- Stickers or rubber stamp for Tasting Passports

What to Do:
- Open the activity mentioning Thanksgiving and showing a picture of a favorite Thanksgiving food (or
choose another holiday recently celebrated). Ask students what their favorite Thanksgiving foods are.
- Continue by asking children about Valentine's Day and foods that we typically eat on Valentine's Day.
Mention that when we think of Valentine's Day, we often think of sweet things and many of the foods they
mentioned were sweet. In fact, we often call the people we love "sweetheart."
- Today we are going to make a special Valentine's Day recipe.
- Show students a carton of milk, the bowl of dry pudding powder and the red food color. Ask students
what they think we will make when we combine these things. Tell them we'll make Sweetheart Pudding.
- Start with a group of 4 - 5 children. After they wash their hands, read aloud the steps in making
pudding. Then, with your supervision, let students prepare their own serving of pudding.
- Repeat for each group of 4 - 5 students. After all of the students who want to have made Sweetheart
Pudding, role model "trying a new food" by tasting it in front of your students. Then have them taste it.
- Add Sweetheart Pudding to the Tasting Chart. Take a tasting survey. Have the children count the results and record them on the Tasting Chart.
- Stamp your passport and the passports of all the children who take a taste, even if they don't eat the entire snack.
- Have the children help clean up.
- Optional: Send home a copy of the Food Matters Family Newsletter.
Sweetheart Pudding
Yield: 1 serving
Equipment
- 1 cup
- 1 tablespoon
- 1 teaspoon
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 2 teaspoons instant vanilla pudding mix
- 3 - 5 drops of red food color
Directions
- Measure 2 tablespoons of milk into a small cup.
- Add 2 teaspoons of pudding mix.
- Add 3 drops of red food color.
- Stir for 2 minutes.
- Let the pudding set for as long as recommended on the pudding box. (Note: 1 box instant pudding mix is enough for 12 students. 1 cup milk is enough for 8 students.)
