Eat the Five Food Group Way!®
Name That Food
Grade Level: 4th Grade / Upper Elementary
Rating:
Synopsis:
Students work in small groups to complete a grid in which they name foods
that meet two criteria required for each box of a puzzle. With primary level
students, complete the grid as a class rather than in small groups, or use
only two or three categories on the grid.
Activity Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Identify foods with two attributes for each of the Five Food Groups
- Generate as many solutions as possible for the two attributes
- Develop skills for working in small groups
Material and Advance Prep:
- Determine the number and size of groups for the activity
- Print and duplicate Name that Food worksheet (1 per group of 2 to 4 students)
- Draw a Name that Food grid on the chalkboard
What to Do:
- Show students the Name That Food grid drawn on the chalkboard. Ask students
what the names down the side represent. Briefly review the food groups and have
students name a few foods in each group.
- Using criteria listed across the top of the grid (or one of your own such as
"You Don't Have to Cook It"), complete one or two boxes as a class. Explain that
they are going to work in groups and complete a grid like the one on the chalkboard.
- Write the name of the food students tasted on the chart.
- Break students into groups of 2 to 4. Distribute a Name That Food worksheet to
each group. Encourage groups to think of answers that other groups will not come up with.
- When students are done, score the sheets with the whole class. For every square
filled in, teams get 1 point. For squares in which a team was the only team with
that answer, they get 2 points.
Going Further
Have a tasting party of healthy snacks based on one of the categories in the grid. For example, yellow snacks might include:
- Cheese and crackers
- Tortilla with Monterey Jack cheese
- Granola and lemon yogurt
