From Moo to You

Activity Synopsis
After listening to a story about cows or a dairy farm, students identify foods made from milk and learn a "Five Mugs of Milk" finger play.
Activity Outcome
Students will be able to:
- Identify foods made from milk
- Recite the words to a finger play
- Hold up the appropriate number of fingers as they participate in a number finger play
- Participate in a tasting party and talk about the tasting experience
Materials and Advance Prep
What to Do
- Read a story about cows or a dairy farm.
- Talk about the story and explain that milk can be made into other foods.
- Display the Food Models and have children identify all the foods that are made from milk. Teach children the "Five Mugs of Milk" finger play.
- Conclude with a tasting party with white and different flavors of milk and discuss students' experience.
- Optional: Take a Tasting Survey.
Going Further
Arrange a field trip to a dairy farm or petting zoo with dairy cows. If possible, let children observe a cow being milked. Spend time at the farm or zoo discussing cows and milk with children.
Have children make "Cheese Cut-outs using cookie cutters.

Five cold mugs of milk sitting in the fridge (children hold up five fingers)
One got drunk by my friend Midge (they pretend to drink one of them)
Four cold mugs of milk sitting in the fridge (children hold up four fingers)
Another got drunk by my friend Midge (they pretend to drink one of them)
Three cold mugs of milk sitting in the fridge (children hold up three fingers)
Another got drunk by my friend Midge (they pretend to drink one of them)
Two cold mugs of milk sitting in the fridge (children hold up two fingers)
Another got drunk by my friend Midge (they pretend to drink one of them)
One last glass of milk sitting in the fridge (children hold up one finger)
I drank it myself instead of Midge (they point to themselves and pretend to drink it)
