Make Friends with the Fruit Group
Students learn which foods are in the Fruit Group and learn that these foods help their bodies heal cuts and bruises. They identify fruits they like to eat and then help Berry Clear-skin shop for fruits at The Farmer's Market.
Activity Outcomes
Students will be able to:
- Name at least three foods in the Fruit Group
- State how Fruit Group foods help keep them healthy
- Name different types of plants on which fruits grow
- Classify fruits according to personal criteria
Materials and Advance Prep
- Make Friends with the Fruit Group PDF worksheet (1 per student)
- Fruit Group Food Cards PDF worksheet (1 per student)
Save class time by having students prepare as homework
- Markers or crayons; scissors
- Kiwi, papaya or cantaloupe (Enough for each student to taste)
- Knife to cut fruit
- Napkins (1 per student)
- Food Card Sort PDF worksheet (1 per student)
- The Farmer's Market PDF assessment (1 per student)
Decide whether to use as homework, seat work or a test.
What to Do
- Begin the lesson with a quick review:
- Think about what you've learned about the Milk Group (Activity 3)
- Who can tell me one thing you learned?
- Who can tell me another?
- Anything else?
Repeat for the Meat and Vegetable Groups (Learn About the Meat Group and Visit the Vegetable Group)
Assessment
- Distribute The Farmer's Market worksheet. Review the directions and have students complete it.
- Review and have students make corrections.
Going Further
Plant Tastings
Invite the cafeteria manager to supply fruits and vegetables students may not have tasted before, cutting boards, knives and clean-up supplies for a plant tasting party. Encourage students to:
- Rate the taste of each fruit or vegetable.
- Identify fruits and vegetables they have not tasted before and will start eating now.
