Grade Level: 2nd Grade / Primary Elementary
Rating: 4 Stars

Nutritious Foods Keep Me Healthy
Students compare their hand with a "grown-up" hand and learn why their bodies need nutritious foods from the Five Food Groups.

Activity Outcomes
Students will be able to:
  • Associate foods from the Five Food Groups as nutritious foods that are good for them
  • Name all Five Food Groups of the Food Guide Pyramid
  • Count the number of bones in the human hand
Materials and Advance Prep
  • Nutritious Foods Keep You Healthy PDF worksheet (1 per student)
  • Folders for storing Pyramid Cafe® materials (1 per student)
  • Crayons or markers
What to Do
  • Tell students that over the next few weeks they'll be learning about nutrition and a restaurant called the Pyramid Cafe®. Distribute folders for students to keep their Pyramid Cafe® materials.
  • Write "nutritious foods" on the chalkboard. As a class, generate definitions of "nutritious foods" and write key phrases on the chalkboard.
  • Distribute the Nutritious Foods Keep You Healthy worksheets. Tell students to take a close look at their hand and the hand on the worksheet. Read the introductory paragraph and ask question 1:
    • How many bones does the grown-up hand have? (27)
  • Have students count the bones in the adult hand.
  • Direct students to place their hand on the grown-up hand. Point out that the difference in size means they still have some growing to do.
  • Read question 2.
    • How much growing do you have to do?
  • Working in pairs, have students trace one another's hands. Have students place their hand on the grown-up hand, lining up the bottom of their palm with the arrow. Their partner should trace their hand with a marker or crayon so they can see how much they need to grow.
  • Read the "How Your Body Grows" section of the worksheet to the class. Add this definition to the chalkboard: Nutritious foods = foods that help the body grow and stay healthy.
  • Have students read the names of the Five Food Groups aloud. Then have them underline the name of each food group as you read its name aloud.
  • Read the "Growing Up Strong and Healthy" section. Ask students to raise their hand if they want to grow up strong and healthy. Reinforce these key ideas:
    • They are responsible for their bodies.
    • Nutritious foods are important for growth and health.
  • If you plan to continue to teaching Pyramid Cafe's® activities, tell students that they'll learn more about nutritious foods from the Five Food Groups in the next few lessons. Have students place their Nutritious Foods Keep You Healthy worksheets in their folders.
