pyramid cafe kid

Grade Level: 2nd Grade / Primary Elementary
Rating: Not Yet Rated

The "Others" Category
Students learn why "Others" category foods are not included in the Five Food Groups. They also sort Food Cards to review what foods are in the Five Food Groups and in the "Others" category.

Activity Outcomes
Students will be able to:
  • Associate foods from the Five Food Groups as "nutritious" foods that are good for them
  • State that they should eat from all Five Food Groups every day because each food group helps keep their body healthy in a different way
  • Explain what the "Others" category is
  • Identify at least three foods that are in the "Others" category
  • State that its okay to eat foods in the "Others" category, but not too often
Materials and Advance Prep
  • Pull two cards for each food group from your Pyramid Food Cards set and shuffle (see Meet the Milk Group Activity)
  • Set aside three "Others" category Food Cards: candy, cookies and soft drink
  • "Others" category Food Cards PDF worksheet (1 per student) Save class time by having students prepare as homework.
  • Markers or crayons; scissors
  • Draw a large outline of the Food Guide Pyramid on the chalkboard or a poster board
  • Tape
  • Five Food Group Check PDF assessment (1 per student)
  • Pyramid Cafe® Mini-Poster PDF (1 per student)
What to Do
  • Tell students it's time for another review. Fan out the 10 Food Cards. Select a volunteer to pick a card, show it to the class and identify its food group. Remove the card from the fan if it is correctly identified. If not, put it back and fan the cards again. Repeat until all 10 cards are correctly classified.
  • Say, "Oh! I've found three more cards to classify. Any volunteers?" Let three volunteers select one of the three "Others" category Food Cards set aside and show them to the class.
  • Explain that foods like candy, cookies and soft drinks don't belong to any of the Five Food Groups.
  • Have students get out their Pyramid Cafe® Mini-Poster. Point out how the tip of the Pyramid is separated from the Five Food Groups.
    • Foods like soft drinks, chips and sweets are called "Others."
    • "Others" don't belong in any of the Five Food Groups.
    • "Others" foods aren't bad. They just don't help us grow and stay healthy.
    • It's okay to eat "Others" foods once in a while. But most of the foods you eat for meals and snacks should be Five Food Group foods.
  • Distribute and review the "Others" category Food Cards worksheet and review the names of the foods. Have students color and cut their cards.
  • Have students take out a sheet of paper and cover the Five Food Group section of their Pyramid Cafe Mini-Poster. Ask students:
    • What would keep your bones and teeth healthy if you only ate foods from the "Others" category?
    • What foods would give you strong muscles?
    • What foods would help heal cuts and bruises?

Help students conclude that "Others" category foods in the tip of the Pyramid alone cannot help them grow up strong and healthy.

  • Now have students uncover the Five Food Groups and just cover the Pyramid's tip.
    • If you only ate foods from the Five Food Groups could you stay healthy? (Yes)
  • Point out the large outline of the Food Guide Pyramid you drew on the chalkboard or poster board. Ask students to sort through their Pyramid Food Cards and pick one or two to place onto this class-size Pyramid.

Assessment

  • Distribute and have students complete the Five Food Group Check worksheet.
  • Review and have students correct.
