with 4th grade heroes Arianna Bones and Marcus Muscleman, and remind students that nutritious foods and healthy eating can be part of the fun! Here are some ideas for using Arianna's Nutrition Expedition™ during the holidays.
Write holiday entries in the Nutrition Journalthat students create in Activity 1, Arianna Bones and the Case of the Missing Food Groups. Answer questions, such as: What is a favorite food tradition in your family during the holidays? How do you participate in the tradition? Why is it special to you and your family?
Add another "mystery solved" to Arianna's and Marcus's dossier. Use the Mystery at the Grocery Store Going Further suggestion at the end of Activity 1 and add a holiday spin to the storyline. Have students answer questions, such as What food group is missing? How did the foods disappear? How will it affect Arianna's and Marcus's holiday festivities? How do Arianna's and Marcus solve the mystery?
Involve students in planning a nutritious, holiday menu for your classroom party. Be sure to ask your school nutrition professional to help, too. Include items, such as single-serve containers of flavored milk; red and green apples with yogurt dip; whole-grain and dried-fruit harvest trail mix; and potato latkes with applesauce and low-fat sour cream. Download Arianna's Bar Graph in Activity 5, Arianna Travels the Orient Express and graph the food groups on the menu. Download Arianna and Marcus characters and make them part of the decorations.
Looking for something fun and different to do with students before the holiday break?
